Mayor Greg Fischer today was joined by leaders from the Air Pollution Control District and the Office of Resilience and Community Services to present new, electric-powered maintenance equipment and a storage shed to The Hope Village.

The Hope Village, which opened in April, is a safe outdoor space where individuals experiencing houselessness can live temporarily outdoors in weather-sealed tents, with access to food, showers, electricity, and social services. In addition to shelter and amenities, they are offered services including care management to create an individualized longer-term plan, healthcare, housing navigation, job training, mental health and substance abuse treatment, pet food and veterinary care, and recovery support. Most importantly, The Hope Village offers a secure site for residents to feel welcome and safe.

“The Hope Village continues to innovate its programming to meet the needs of its residents, including taking opportunities to not only improve community, but protect our environment,” said the Mayor. “This is a real community effort, and I’m excited about the number of partners and supportive services who have jumped into action to help those in our community who are experiencing houselessness.”

The equipment was made available through the Air Quality Trust Fund, which is disbursed exclusively by the city’s Air Pollution Control Board. The fund is used for conducting and funding projects that improve or research local air quality. The use of electric-powered equipment improves local air quality by reducing emissions of particulate matter and pollution that forms ozone and greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change.

“This was a great opportunity to support the maintenance needs of The Hope Village in a way that aligns with Louisville’s sustainability and clean air quality goals,” said Carl Hilton, Chair of the Air Pollution Control Board. “Opportunities to use less-polluting equipment should be accessible to all residents, and we are pleased to use our Air Quality Trust Fund to help that happen.”

The Board has recently used the fund to help Louisville lead the way on green energy projects that improve Louisville's air quality and reduce the city's carbon footprint. Last October, the fund was used to help install an electric vehicle charging station at Jefferson Memorial Forest’s Tom Wallace Park.

The Hope Village is operated by The Hope Buss, whose mission is to combat hopelessness in Louisville’s underserved neighborhoods and populations, bridging the gap between the streets and stable housing by creating transformational housing communities and empowering marginalized voices.

“Since the opening of The Hope Village earlier this year, we are grateful to see the outpouring of support from organizations and individuals who are committed to lifting up houseless residents in Louisville,” said Tameka Laird, Director of the Office of Resilience and Community Services. “This gift of lawn equipment will not only engage The Hope Village residents in beautification efforts and maintenance projects but will foster a greater sense of community. We know a healthy environment is imperative to building a resilient community.”
