Free tire recycling, along with a community litter clean-up event, will be offered in Packwood on Friday and Saturday.

Passenger car and light truck tires will be accepted for free recycling from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sept. 24 and Sept. 25 at the Packwood Community Hall, 12935 US-12 Highway, thanks for a special tire amnesty grant from the Department of Ecology awarded to the Lewis County Department of Public Works, Solid Waste Utility, which is coordinating the collection.

An added opportunity on Sept. 25, National Public Lands Day, will be a community litter pick-up event, organized by the Packwood Improvement Club, Gifford Pinchot Trash Force, and the U.S. Forest Service.

For both events, COVID-19 safety will be key. Please follow state and local guidelines regarding masking and social distancing.

On Friday, Sept. 24, tires will be collected from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lewis County residents are permitted to drop off up to 12 passenger car tires or light truck tires for free. The tires can be on or off the rim. No semi-truck or heavy equipment will be accepted.

On Saturday, Sept. 25, the tire recycling event and litter pick-up will take place during the same 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. window. For the litter event, organizers will have designated spots to clean up, then volunteers will bring clean-up items back to the Community Hall for disposal. Personal protective equipment, litter bags, litter grabbers, and other supplies will be supplied.

Organizers remind volunteers to bring water, wear sturdy shoes, and dress appropriately for weather and conditions.

An additional grant from the Department of Ecology is helping to fund the community litter pickup.
